Coon Rapids was once a stop for commercial steamboat traffic on the Mississippi River until the construction of the Coon Rapids Dam, which subsequently made the city the northern terminus for the navigable portion of the river. The three of the main road routes in the city are U.S. Highway 10 and Minnesota State Highways 47 and 610. Coon Rapids Riverdale Station is served by the Northstar Commuter Rail line that opened in 2009 to connect the northwest suburbs to downtown Minneapolis. Coon Rapids is partially located in Minnesota’s 6th congressional district, represented by Republican Michele Bachmann.

Coon Rapids is the largest city in Anoka County, Minnesota, and a northern suburb of Minneapolis. It is the twelfth largest city in Minnesota with a population of 61,476, as recorded in the 2010 census. It is the seventh largest Twin Cities suburb of Minnesota.

In the summertime, the water level of the Mississippi River upstream from the Coon Rapids Dam is raised, thus allowing its use as a six mile recreational pool. The Anoka-Ramsey Community College has a vibrant theater department, and the Coon Rapids High School also hosts concerts, musicals, and pageants. Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park also has many community events, as well as a summer concert series. Some of the movie Mighty Ducks was filmed at the Cook Ice Arena which was unfortunately demolished in spring of 2012 to make room for a new skating rink nearby. Bunker Hills Park is home of the world famous Bunker Hills Golf Course, which has hosted the Senior PGA Tour. The Coon Rapids National Little League baseball team won the 2007 Midwest Regional Title and has played in the Little League World Series.
